Seasons

May to December.  Autumn, Winter and Spring are all great times for snapper fishing. The fishing can be stunning further out with big workups caused by predators from above and below chasing pilchards and sardines.  This is the time for the spectacular sight of hundreds (thousands at times) of Gannets hitting the water at extreme speeds.  At the same time dolphins, whales, snapper, kingfish kahawai and other predators feast from below.  This is a fantastic and well kept secret. Amazingly the Hauraki Gulf is one of the best spots for it in the country and arguably the world for this activity.  Ok there’s not usually Marlin in the Hauraki Gulf workups but go a little further out past Great Barrier and your in with a chance of the same spectacle but with the swords and huge sickle shape tails of Striped and Blue Marlin along with Tuna of course.

Just yesterday (October 23rd 2011) one of our charters saw 4 individual whales within massive workups of diving Gannets, and feeding dolphins.  We cleaned up with limit catches of snapper up to 12lb and the odd kingfish also.  This has been the normal scenario out wide  recently.  This activity is further out so we recommend longer trips to make it worthwhile with Gulf Harbour being the ideal departure location.

January to May. The snapper are closer and the fishing whilst not as spectacular can run hot.  This is also the time that Marlin fishing is at it’s best.  A 6 hour snapper trip is now viable option in any boat.  West Haven is the ideal departure location over this period.
